How It Works
From a topic to a complete, ready-to-teach lesson in under 90 seconds. Here is exactly what happens when you use LessonPlan.
Select your year group and subject
Choose from Reception through to Year 13 and select your subject. LessonPlan covers all National Curriculum subjects at primary level, and all major GCSE and A-Level subjects at secondary — including exam board awareness for AQA, Edexcel, and OCR.
Enter your lesson topic
Type your lesson topic in the topic field. You can be as specific or as broad as you need. The Additional Context field lets you add detail that shapes the output: where the lesson sits in a sequence, prior learning your class has covered, specific SEN requirements, or particular areas of focus. The more context you provide, the more precisely tailored the lesson will be.
Generate
Click Generate. In the background, LessonPlan cross-references the National Curriculum for your year group and subject, applies the pedagogical frameworks that structure effective lessons (Rosenshine's Principles, AfL, I Do / We Do / You Do sequencing), and constructs a complete lesson from the ground up based on your prompt. This takes under 90 seconds.
Download and teach
Your three files are ready to download immediately: a PowerPoint presentation you can open and teach from, a Word lesson plan document suitable for planning files and observations, and a differentiated worksheet. No editing required — though of course you can adapt anything to suit your class.
What's in each file?
📊 PowerPoint Presentation
A structured slide deck covering the full lesson arc. Slides include a reactivation starter (linking to prior learning), key vocabulary introduction, a modelled example (I Do), a guided activity (We Do), independent practice (You Do), a hinge-point question to check understanding, an extension challenge, and a plenary. For Maths lessons, the structure extends to 13 slides to allow proper worked examples and practice. Images are included for dual coding where relevant.
📄 Lesson Plan Document
A detailed Word document containing learning objectives, curriculum references (specific National Curriculum attainment targets or exam board specification points), key vocabulary, lesson timing, differentiation strategies for lower, middle, and higher attaining pupils, AfL checkpoints, and notes for teaching assistants and SEND support. Written in a format suitable for planning files, learning walks, and Ofsted preparation.
✏️ Worksheet
A differentiated worksheet with progressive challenge levels, aligned to the lesson content. Designed to provide approximately 20–25 minutes of independent work. Levels are indicated visually so pupils can self-select appropriately, without drawing attention to ability grouping.
Matching your school's style
If your school uses a specific PowerPoint template — with particular colours, fonts, or branding — you can upload it in your account settings. LessonPlan will extract your school's colour scheme and font, and apply them to every lesson you generate going forward. Upload one of your existing presentations and the output will match your school's visual style as closely as possible.
Common questions about how it works
How long does generation take?
Under 90 seconds for a complete lesson. The exact time depends on the complexity of the topic and any additional context you've provided, but most lessons generate in 60–90 seconds.
Can I generate a lesson without signing in?
Yes — you can try the generator without an account. You'll be asked to sign in before downloading your files, but you can see the lesson structure and slides before committing.
How specific can I be in my prompt?
As specific as you need. You can mention that this is lesson 3 of 6 in a unit, that your class has already covered a particular concept, that you have pupils with specific SEN needs, or that you want a particular focus area emphasised. The Additional Context field is designed for exactly this.
Can I edit the files after downloading?
Yes. All files are standard PowerPoint and Word format, fully editable. Most teachers use the output as a strong starting point and make small adjustments for their specific class.
Does it work for secondary as well as primary?
Yes — Reception through to Year 13, including GCSE and A-Level. The tool is aware of AQA, Edexcel, and OCR specifications and will reference the relevant exam board content for secondary lessons.
